You, Me, and Mic?
A-Stack is expanding, and we need your help building what comes next.
As Substack is evolving, so shall we. Since the beginning of this newsletter, we have focused on African writing and writers. And today, I want to tap into a market of storytellers we have not given attention to.
Podcasters.
I know, I know. We are all getting weird about microphones because it’s getting wilder out there with the hot takes and rage-baiting, but there are still people using their mics very wisely. Was the decision a little biased because I am a podcaster? Maybe… but it will be worth it, I promise.
A-Stack is home to African creators, and we can agree that we are a talented bunch that is finding its way to the top, even when we aren’t wanted there. African creators have to work harder to get the deserved recognition with limited access to resources, too. When I brush shoulders with fellow creators, I realise that most of the time we are held back by the lack of information, and that the successful creators are getting there because they are just getting up and doing what they need to do.
As I show up, trip, fall, get up and learn, I WILL take you with me on the journey. Because “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu,” a.k.a. I am because you are.
Here is what I envision for this additional space. The vision is to share tips and news with you, so you know how to put together a good show and make it discoverable. I will review platforms and software to help you find the right ones for your voice.
The other gap, a result of my frustration in the podcasting space, is finding guests. The platforms that exist for this purpose are paid and heavily Eurocentric. I want to talk to African people, and I want to be on African podcasts, but it is so hard to discover both.
While I have decided to expand in this direction, I do want to hear from you, too. Whether you are a podcaster, an aspiring podcaster, or you work closely with podcasters, what’s the one thing you wish existed for African podcasters right now?
I can’t build this without you, so please use the comment section without holding back.
Your new favourite A-Stacker,
Nobuhle
